photoblog image Brasilia - Federal Government District

Brasilia - Federal Government District

Another view of the city - at the right is the Cathedral, then, on two sides of the green space, the green blocks of the various ministries.

At the head of the mall are the congress buildings, the large double tower block housing the congressional administration. Beyond the ministries on the right you see one of the bridges over the lake (formed by damming some small rivers).

Oscar Niemeyer was the architect of Brasilia - a socialist influenced by Le Corbusier. Presumably the cathedral is small because he was not a believer and being an evangelical socialist assumed that others should not be :-)

Niemeyer celebrated his 103rd birthday on December 15 2010 and is still working.  He remarried at the age of 99.

great overview from that lookout point
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Chantal - being on the 14th floor had its advantages - unfortunately this view is going to be spoiled by the building of another hotel in front. If I go again (unlikely) I'll have stay in the new one!
The cathedral has a similar design to the Liverpool Cathedral (RC)
Tom Wilson: There's some similarity, Richard, but it is clearly not a copy - I think that Niemeyer's design is much lighter.
The Cathedral reminds me a wee bit of our Olympic Stadium. Unbelievable that Niemeyer is still active and working at 103. I wonder how old his bride was when he remarried? I'm guessing she is younger in years.
Tom Wilson: Your guess would be right - but at least he didn't go for a 25-year old bimbo smile

Quite an interesting view with this modern architecture.
The old man is strong!
Tom Wilson: They'll probably have to have him put down, Richard smile

Superb view of an mythic city!
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Olivier
Great view of the city Tom smile
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Linda - it certainly helped one to figure out the geography - and to decide that getting around required wheels!

Tom Wilson: Much to the annoyance of his family, I understand smile Good luck to him, I say!
