Knossos

Early in the guided tour - the "crazy paving" courtyard is original, along with the lower part of the stone wall: the concrete construction on top of the wall is the rear of one of Sir Arthur Evans's reconstructions.  He deliberately used concrete instead of stone to show that they were reconstructions.  To the right of the picture you see another original building, almost two storeys high, with modern additions, presumably to keep it standing.

a great idea to use the concrete so that future people would know even without a written account

the image feels soft like a film photograph
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Sherri - yes, the concrete keeps everything honest.

I think it made sense to use concrete
Tom Wilson: Indeed it does - an excellent idea, I thought.

What a great place to visit Tom.
Tom Wilson: One of the world's most famous archaeological sites - definitely worth a visit.
I am not sure about the concrete "reconstructions"
Tom Wilson: They are very contentious - this is the rear of one of them - the front has a restored fresco and they certainly give some idea of what the place must have been like.
Odd feelining of isolation here.
Tom Wilson: I see what you mean - actually quite a lot of people around!
It's wonderful that they are able to do reconstructions like this, Tom. Like how you've included the crazy paving courtyard in your shot.
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Beverly.
I guess the concrete serves a purpose but it is the courtyard that I like.
Tom Wilson: Probably the oldest part of the Palace.
Not a great vista...
Tom Wilson: True enough - it's ancient urban smile
the concrete didn't make the grade back then Tom....petersmile
Tom Wilson: I believe the Romans had a long-lasting form of concrete - this is a trifle early smile
