photoblog image Spirit palace

Spirit palace

This is the Royal Ancestral Shrine of Jongmyo - housing the spirits of the kings of the Joseon dynasty.  Every May the ceremonial ancestral rites are enacted on this stone forecourt. The buildings are very plain with undecorated wooden roofs - since the spirits don't need elaborate decoration :-)

Here's a video of the ceremony.

I Googled this to see if this was in Korea, Tom, and I see the answer is Yes. I've seen some highly decorated roofs in Seoul, so this one does indeed seem plain. I guess it makes sense that some are and some aren't.
Tom Wilson: Yes, for most of this month they're all from Korea, Ginnie.

Fantastic stuff Tom: I wonder how many people perform the ritual?
Tom Wilson: I've put in a link to a video of the ritual, Chris.

Wonder what it looks like when they are performing the ritual
Tom Wilson: There's now a link to a video, Zed.
Thats a large shrine, I like your angle too.

A simple elegance to this building
Tom Wilson: I agree, Bill - very elegant.

I like you low angle here, Tom. It really emphasises the stonework.
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Alan.

Its a fine place for Ancestors, Tom.
Tom Wilson: The only place to be, Ray smile
It looks quite an old building Tom.
Tom Wilson: You never can tell in the Far East, Brian - but the palace as whole was started, I think, in 1392. How many times it has been destroyed, burned down and rebuilt is another question smile
Really enjoyed the video, it gives your image scale. It is very interesting Tom smile
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Linda.
Excellent point of view Tom well captured
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Hamish
Thanks for the cideo link Tom lots of dancers and love the large gongs.
Lovely image, but it looks so deserted. (:o)
Tom Wilson: I guess it gets very busy at the real tourist time of year, Rosalyn - but we were there on a week-day and quite early.
