Another view of the city - at the right is the Cathedral, then, on two sides of the green space, the green blocks of the various ministries.
At the head of the mall are the congress buildings, the large double tower block housing the congressional administration. Beyond the ministries on the right you see one of the bridges over the lake (formed by damming some small rivers).
Oscar Niemeyer was the architect of Brasilia - a socialist influenced by Le Corbusier. Presumably the cathedral is small because he was not a believer and being an evangelical socialist assumed that others should not be :-)
Niemeyer celebrated his 103rd birthday on December 15 2010 and is still working. He remarried at the age of 99.
