photoblog image Great Wall

Great Wall

A section of the reconstructed Great Wall - away from the tourist sections the wall is often just a pile of rubble on the ground.

The reconstructed parts are impressive, Tom, but the deteriorating parts even more so.
Tom Wilson: There's certainly more of it!
Visiting that place is my wife's dream Tom!
Tom Wilson: I imagine that there are regular flights from Charles de Gaulle to Beijing, Richard smile

A powerful image Tom. Maybe the whole thing is just too big to maintain
Tom Wilson: That's probably true, Chris
I have heard that before Tom. Do you think that they might one day recreate it all? Perhaps that might be a pointless exercise.
Tom Wilson: I think that a lot of it is in pretty inaccessible regions, Chad - little likelihood of tourist traffic.

one of the world wonders indeed. It is amazing wherever you have been. I like Ray's comment.
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Philine.
Sounds like a description of Blackpool, Tom...It must be a wonderful place to visit.
Tom Wilson: He, he smile It certainly made an interesting break from the discussions we were having with Chinese bureaucrats smile
Love your treatment here, Tom. My son sent me a selfie from here a few years ago.
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Mary - I thought the B&W suited.
They built empty cities to keep their growth going perhaps they will rebuild more of the wall for the same reason
Tom Wilson: If they get desperate enough, Bill!

The Great Wall would probably require a Great Deal of restoration if done in its entirety. Still, China isn't short of a bob or two (or, at least, it wasn't...)
Tom Wilson: It's certainly not short of workers! In fact, it could put the 11 million people it has in jail to work!
Very good image Tom, I guess the bits not restored are in areas where general tourists aren't normally allowed to go.
Tom Wilson: That's exactly the case, Brian - also, there's the fact that large stretches are in areas difficult to access.

I didn't know that, Tom, but it sounds so likely
Tom Wilson: Yes, I was quite amazed to get to the end of the rebuilt section and discover there was virtually nothing above ground level beyond - even less than you find of Hadrian's Wall.
this image is timeless Tom... i'm sure that they could never restore the ruins of what has crumbled....petersmile
