photoblog image Linnaeus

Linnaeus

Carl Linnaeus, otherwise known, following his enoblement, as Carl von Linné - you'll see that the famous taxonomic botanist, naturalist, physician, is holding a bunch of flowers in his left hand.  Probably one of the most significant figures in science - the botanist's equivalent of Einstein perhaps.  There's a very full article about him in Wikipedia.  His statue stands in front of Kungliga Biblioteken, Stockholm.

Having a few days in Northumberland - connection a bit dodgy!

The guano coating seems somehow appropriate, Tom.
Tom Wilson: Yes, it kind of suits him smile

One of the truly great men Tom
Tom Wilson: Indeed he was, Chris
Wow, and I had not heard of him Tom
Tom Wilson: Really? I am surprised, Chad!
He appears quite satisfied with what's he's doing, Tom (or, in this case, what he's already done)!
Tom Wilson: A happy seeming fella!

He was a famous man and there is a famous street named after him in Amsterdam.
Tom Wilson: As you can imagine, there are lots of streets and a university named for him in Sweden!
Thank you for making me discover this famous man Tom! I enjoyed reading the article.
Tom Wilson: And we still use his taxonomic system today - and you can visit his garden in Uppsala
I love that the sculptor has his subject looking at the viewer. Really love the friendly look rather than the pompous stance most memorial statues feature.
Tom Wilson: Yes, nicely different!

We learned about this guy at school - something to do with biological classification. He added difficult names to ordinary plants and animals and caused me to spend more hours behind the books smile
Tom Wilson: No doubt it did you good, Louis smile
He was a very clever bloke. I can't remember plant names and he managed to classify the bloomin' lot (no pun intended)
Tom Wilson: Me neither, Bill - I don't know haw some folk manage it!
it's a wonderful sculpture Tom... i like the details and his proud smile....petersmile
