May Day 1

May Day is still properly celebrated as International Workers' Day in Sweden, with banners and bands and the marching workers - instead of the insipid Spring Bank Holiday of the UK :-) Here are members of the Social Democratic Party in Borås.

Not a lot of youngsters in this scene, Tom.
Tom Wilson: There were quite a number in later groups.

Terrific...I like the way you caught the steps of the participants..great street photog.
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Bonnie
i like your shot of the May Day parade Tom...
60 years during the cold war we thought that this as a communist holiday... we were taught that it was a bad thing to be a communist...

social thoughts have changed since then....petersmile
Tom Wilson: I suspect that it was the same reason that resulted in it being turned into out Spring Bank Holiday
Well a very nice candid of these folks!
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Elizabeth
That dog seems to be wearing a placard Tom, I wonder what it says.
Tom Wilson: Didn't get to see it clearly at the time, Chad. It is probably something simple like Support the SDP

It all looks very laid back, Tom
Tom Wilson: A very happy occasion, Lisl - they trooped from the city square to the nearby park, where there was entertainment and political speeches.
Ah, ah, j'aime beaucoup le chien avec sa pancarte. Jolie scène.
Tom Wilson: Merci, Martine!

Interesting - I never think of Sweden as being very politicised Tom
Tom Wilson: Oh, they are pretty political, Chris, with parties trying to find new ways in the general dissatisfaction with politicians.
To tell you the truth, we don't really hear much about Swedish politics, do we?!
Tom Wilson: Not a lot - although there has been news about the rise of the right wing party, the Swedish Democrats (a very misleading name! They are basically fascist)
May Day is a very important event in France Tom!
Tom Wilson: Indeed - and in most of the rest of Europe apart from the UK
No translation needed for the sign.
Tom Wilson: Pretty straightforward, isn't it? smile You might have a little more difficulty with the shop sign, which says "Coffee corner"

A good cardio exercise and done in peace, like they are all heading for a pub smile This picture has that silvery sheen again.
Tom Wilson: The odd look is the result of compensating for the very strong shadow in the foreground - I haven't figured out how to lighten that without affecting the rest of the pic - must figure out "masking" one of these days!
Quite right too, Tom.
Tom Wilson: Time we brought it back in the UK, Frank!
