photoblog image Tomas Olsson

Tomas Olsson

I'd call this one of the pieces of street art in Borås, but for the fact that it is at the top of a cliff near the Central Station.  Tomas Olsson grew up in the city and went on to ski some of the highest mountains in the world - he died during an attempt to ski down the North face of Mount Everest, having climbed to the summit with fellow "extreme skier" Tormod Granheim from Norway. Granheim made the descent safely. See Wikipedia for more.

A fine piece of work, Tom.
Tom Wilson: Very dynamic! https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/FiletongueassionExtreme.jpg
this is a magnificent bronze sculpture of Tomas Olsson... it looks so real showing some of his skills Tom....petersmile
Tom Wilson: Yes, a fine piece of work - just erected earlier this year. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/FiletongueassionExtreme.jpg
That's an amazing piece of work! I remember seeing a CBS 60 Minutes piece on him.
Tom Wilson: You have the advantage there, Elizabeth - I'd never heard of him! https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/FiletongueassionExtreme.jpg

This is a wonderful tribute to Tomas. He lived dangerous and he died doing what he loved. Too young though, but that is how life is. What a story.
Tom Wilson: "Extreme" sportsmen/women tend not to live long, sadly. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/FiletongueassionExtreme.jpg

What a brave and talented man Olsson must have been
Tom Wilson: Indeed he was - but you can only tempt death so long! https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/FiletongueassionExtreme.jpg
What a way to go, I assume, if that was his life and soul. This tribute to him says it all.
Tom Wilson: A loss, though - think of what he might have done when his sport days were over and he could have used that energy for other things - a waste of a life, really. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/FiletongueassionExtreme.jpg

I think he has captured the essence of extreme skiing very well here Tom. Pity he had to pay the ultimate price..
Tom Wilson: It's a fine piece of work. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/FiletongueassionExtreme.jpg
I guess he died doing what he loved and this looks an appropriate tribute
Tom Wilson: An excellent sculptor at work, I think https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/FiletongueassionExtreme.jpg
I can't imagine what it must be like to be an extreme anything Tom.
Tom Wilson: I get extremely tired from time to time, Chad smile

Definitely extreme. That some people like these extreme challenges, I can understand. But where do they get the money and time for it. Believe me, to ski a summit like that is a big project, both in terms of time, effort and cost. Even if I had the guts, I wouldn't be able afford and get that long a break from work, to do it.

So, hat off to Olsson and Granheim.
Tom Wilson: I assume they are sponsored by various ski firms and cold weather wear makers - and they did it full time, is my understanding!
It it lifesize or larger, Tom? I quite like the action. Reminds me that I once did a glass x country skier but never took a photo of it.
Tom Wilson: Life-size, Mary - a pity you didn't take that photo!
Definitely a fine memorial of a very brave, if somewhat foolhardy, man.
Tom Wilson: Rather special
