Batalha - exterior of the unfinished chapels

Back to the Portugal tour.  The Monastery of Batalha is one of the finest religious buidings in Portugal, never actually completed, as this view of the Unfinished Chapels, suggests.  The Chapels were commissioned in 1437 by King Edward of Portugal, known as Dom Duarte, as a mausoleum for himself and his descendents.

It is a stunner, Tom.
Tom Wilson: It is indeed, Ray, thanks.
Quelle beauté ! On ne fait plus de tel travail maintenant.
Tom Wilson: Merci, Martine
That is some chapel Tom. Why were they never finished?
Tom Wilson: Both King and master builder died and it seems there was no political or religious will to carry on.
Wow - that is some place, Tom! What is unfinished about it?
Tom Wilson: There's no roof on the chapels - work stopped when both King and master builder died within a year.

What a place it is to reside in for eternity Tom!
Tom Wilson: As you'll see the stone work inside is amazing.
Never finished? That reminds me of Gaudi's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona!
Tom Wilson: In this case it was the master builder and Dom Duarte who died.

An excellent wide-angle shot. Quite a tomb - is the King buried in there?
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Louis - yes Dom Duarte's tomb is there.
A great picture Tom, and very interesting too.
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Chad
A very distinctive building, finished or not.
Tom Wilson: That's certainly true, Brian.
Is it just a facade, a shell?
Tom Wilson: Nope, it just lacks a roof, and there are tombs inside as Dom Duarte planned
i know why it is still unfinished Tom... but what a magnificent chapel if you can call it that...
i love it in b&w and the way that you framed it with the people to give it scale....petersmile
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Peter - it's a very fine subject!
