Batalha

More stone-carving in the Manueline style on an archway in the Unfinished Chapels - I'm always amazed by the delicacy of the carving here, I can't imagine it being done with hammers and chisels!

Whao! This is delicate work, Tom.
Tom Wilson: Ain't it just!
Incredible detail, Tom - what artwork!
Tom Wilson: Amazing, isn't it?
this is so elaborate! i wonder if the artisans had completed a fair bit of work and made a mistake towards the finishing touches (extra material chipped off for instance), that would have been frustrating, Tom.
Tom Wilson: That would be a bit of a disaster, wouldn't it!!?

No doubt the character of the stone is perfect for this sort of incredible artistry Tom
Tom Wilson: Must be, I think - sandstone, perhaps?
Must have been very small chisels Tom. Amazing
Tom Wilson: Staggering - it's like lacework in stone.
I would like to be able to 'read' the carvings.
Tom Wilson: I think most of it is purely decorative, Mary, with just the occasional bit of Christian symbolism.
It looks incredibly fragile doesn't it.
Tom Wilson: Amazingly delicate.
They must have used tiny chisels and hammers...
Tom Wilson: It's amazingly fine work!
