Fatima - Basilica of the Santissima Trinidade

The original shrine, shown yesterday, proved to be too small for the number of pilgrims that turn up every year and so this new, Basilica of the Santissima Trinidade, completed in 2006. It has room for more than 8,500 people.

The bloke on the cross is a bit on the thin side, Tom...a stickman!
Tom Wilson: You'll get a close look coming up, Ray.
This is a really wonderful composition, Tom!
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Elizabeth - it's a very difficult building to photograph because of the size and the slope of the land.
That's a very contemporary crucifix, Tom, probably not to everyones taste.
Tom Wilson: Another view of it coming up, Frank!

I am not surprised it's so popular Tom
Tom Wilson: It's all a mystery to me, Chris.
Phew, this is really impressive Tom!
Tom Wilson: It's an impressive site altogether, Richard - but, for a non-believer like myself, rather weird!
That's a lot of pilgrims. More than watch Plymouth Argyle
Tom Wilson: 80,000 turned up this October 13th, Bill - more than watch any Premier League team, I'd guess!

Well, they won't have a space problem.
Tom Wilson: The two buildings can probably take close to 10,000 people - and there's another kind of open air hall close to the original sanctuary that looks as though it could take another 1,000 - but 80,000 people turned up this Oct. 13th!
Magnifique prise de vue !
Tom Wilson: Merci, Claudine!

This is new to me - what a cold building - but well accessible for handicapped persons.
Tom Wilson: Not an appealing building for me either, Philine - I think its main function was simply to provide more space for worshippers - of whom there were 80,000 on Oct. 13th this year. I'm afraid it is all a mystery to me, a non-believer smile
Funny that there were so little about at the time you took this.
Tom Wilson: It was fairly early in the day and the hall, which is open-sided, which lies between this building and the original shrine was full of pilgrims from India. On Oct 13th this year there were more than 80,000 people there.
From here it could almost be an airport terminal Tom.
Tom Wilson: You got that right, Chad - I suspect that one of the aims was that it shouldn't compete with the building at the other end of the huge square.
I would never have imagined that so many people would visit the place, I guess it is one of things that those of a Catholic persuasion put on their 'to do' list.
Tom Wilson: I guess that's right, Brian.

I have never seen a shrine like this one, Tom
