Having left Lisbon, we are now en route to Santander, via Salamanca.  Here you see the city with the twin cathedrals on the horizon and, to their left, the ancient university, founded in 1134.

Tom Wilson: I guess the clerics would think so, Chris smile
Do I take it that you are catching the ferry home from Santander Tom? I have done that before, an excellent way to cut the journey short.
Tom Wilson: I'm using the 'historical present' - this was back last June smile Yes, drove to Plymouth, ferry to Santander and then driving via Porto, Batalha, etc. to Lisbon, then back through Salamanca - a great way to go. No check-in hassles, no stripping down to your socks for security... smile

Tom Wilson: One of the oldest in Europe, Mary - the oldest in Spain and the first ever to be given the title of University. The oldest foundation is Bologna.
quite a nice view over the city and a pleasant day to be outside as well, Tom.
Tom Wilson: The whole trip was in good weather - I think we had one "off" day smile
A beautiful building isn't it, it puts those in the foreground to shame.
Tom Wilson: Well the old town was pretty small and I guess expansion was necessary!

Tom Wilson: Merci, Jean Pierre!
A pleasing absence of tower blocks
Tom Wilson: There's probably a local law against them smile
