Salamanca 3 of several

Main door of the "new" cathedral.  There are two cathedrals on the same site, connected to one another.  The "old" cathedral is in the Romanesque style, built in the 12th century, while the 'new' is much larger, in the Gothic style, started in the 16th century and completed in the 18th.

This is a gorgeous portal, Tom.
Tom Wilson: Pretty fine carving, eh?
two cathedrals... the mind reels...
Tom Wilson: Yes, they are joined together - it was planned to pull the old one down, but they realised they needed it while the new one was being built - so it survived.
Amazing architecture, Tom, what detail.
Tom Wilson: Stunning stone carving.

The amount of carving is almost overwhelming
Tom Wilson: Slightly over the top one might say smile
How strange to have two connected cathedrals Tom, but I prefer that to pulling down or altering the old one.
Tom Wilson: Yes, that was the original plan, but they realised they needed to keep the old while the new was built.
Would maka a good background for a grand group portrait.
Tom Wilson: It would indeed!
There is some wonderful work and craftsmanship in that doorway.
Tom Wilson: The old stone-masons knew what they were doing!
OMG that's something!
Tom Wilson: Beautiful, isn't it?
Great entrance Tom
