Street Library

"Little free libararies", street libraries, or pop-up libraries, as they are also known, started in the USA.  It is now a world-wide movement - there's a bunch of 'em in Bristol, for example.  The idea being to put one on your property, but accessible to the passer-by, or on some agreed communal space, and then fill it up with books you no longer need.  Passers-by take a book and then return it to any other little free library they come across.  The movement seems especially strong in the USA, where it originated, and in Australia.  So I was a little surprised to come across this one in Druskininkai.  The lighting is odd, since it was a night shot, and the shadow is from a street light, not the sun!  Read all about it: https://littlefreelibrary.org/

You did well with this flash shot! I love the little libraries - though I don't think we have any here in Flagstaff...
Tom Wilson: Silly me! I use flash so infrequently that I never gave it a thought! This was just the available street lighting! As for Flagstaff, talk a walk down Summer Run, Walkup Drive or N. Snowflake Drive smile
I haven't come across these, Tom, a good idea though.
Tom Wilson: No doubt, after this, you'll find them everywhere, Frank smile
there is something similar in Singapore too and i think is a good initiative. i like your shot of this structure.
Tom Wilson: Yes - I'm not surprised - they are popping up everywhere.
It truly is a great idea, Tom, but which I did not know originated in the USA. Hmmmm. So something good CAN come out of that country???
Tom Wilson: Oh, lots of good things, Ginnie - clam chowder, butter pecan ice cream... smile

I found one in Bristol the other day, but will need to return the book I borrowed to the same one, as it is the only one I have found so far. It's a great idea and I hope it catches on in Bath

We have many in old telephone booths too Tom. Brilliant idea isn't it!
Tom Wilson: Yes, indeed - telephone booths are quite favourite locations for them.

A fine idea, and it can work!
Tom Wilson: It seems to be growing, Ray - you might put one just outside your garden gate smile Start a trend!
What a great social innovation Tom.
Tom Wilson: Given the Tory intention to demolish public services, they may be the only kind we have before long, Chad :-(

C'est une bonne idée si les gens sont respectueux.
Tom Wilson: Les gens semblent traiter ces petites bibliothèques avec respect, Martine.
What a good idea. I haven't come across any round my way but it is surprising how many places now have bookcases with used books in which they sell for local charities, I have even seen them in McDonalds, as well as quite a few local supermarkets.
Tom Wilson: Yes, the charity bookshops have just about killed off the secondhand bookshop - mores the pity!
We have several here on the island.
Tom Wilson: Yes - they seem to have become pretty common in north America.
superbe idée!! amitiés
Tom Wilson: Oui, ils sont aussi en France!
It's a great idea...
