Farne Puffin

Unlikely fact: puffins can fly at up to 40 miles an hour (64 kph) In 2014 there were  39,962 breeding pairs on the islands, but I think numbers have gone down since then, because of a decline in the stock of the fish they feed on.

Magnifique macareux.
Tom Wilson: Merci, Martine
Wonderfully photogenic birds Tom. They are nearly as fast as Alan Rolfe on his bike
Tom Wilson: They are that, Bill - I wonder how long Alan could keep up with them? Especially over water :=)
There's no doubting what cute characters they are.
Tom Wilson: They're very distinctive in the sea-bird world!

Very good image of this delightfully eccentric-looking bird, Tom.
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Ray - I think it is probably the oddest-looking European bird, but there are certainly some in other parts of the world that run it close, like the Toucan, for example smile
