These are grey or Atlantic seals - there are about 5,000 of them around the Farne Islands - the third biggest colony in the UK. Some of the smaller harbour seals breed here, too.

they look like they were rolling around and now have been startled by something to your right, Tom. i like the whiskers on the left seal.

They look too fat to move but once in the water they are graceful
Tom Wilson: I read that they have to spend about 12 hours a day on land to digest their meals.

These are the seals that have the white pups so often shown in posters of seals.
Tom Wilson: Indeed they are, Mary - I guess they are pretty common along the Canadian coasts.
They are thinking not another boat load, can't they leave us to snooze!

they are a strange colour Tom and the seem to be very large animals....peterwink
