Farne Islands - food for the chicks

I spotted a bit of excitement among nearby photographers and realised it was related to this puffin bringing home fish for the chicks.  It seems a bit unusual that the bird is just standing here on the rocks, since the nests are in burrows in the earthier part of the island.  Normally the puffins dive straight in to avoid the black-headed gulls that try to rob them of their catch.  According to the page linked below, the record for the number fish held in a puffin's bill is 62!

The final puffin picture - at least for now :-)  You'll find an interesting page about puffins here.

The classic puffin photo. I can imagine the puffin chick who has the 62 fish was probably rather fed up with them and probably want a good steak or something smile
Tom Wilson: Mmm - my guess is that their bellies would swell so much, they'd need even more smile

Really enjoyed the series on Puffins, thank you, Tom.
Tom Wilson: My pleasure, Ray - of course, I have dozens of them smile
By not going back to its nest it gave you the chance to take this great photo.
Tom Wilson: It did indeed, Brian - thanks. I saw one bird dive into its burrow, hotly pursued by a BH Gull!

Tom Wilson: He, he! Merci, Jean Pierr!
Oh how stunning! I love puffins. But seeing the mouth full is spectacular!!!
Tom Wilson: They are very appealing birds, with or without fish smile

You happened to capture the puffin bringing home fish. A wonderful image! Lol at Alan!
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Philine
I often wonder at this capacity to catch and retain
Tom Wilson: All down to the internal structure of the bill.
62! Those are well motivated birds...
Tom Wilson: Amazing, isn't it?
You must have been soooo pleased to get this fantastic shot, Tom!
Tom Wilson: It was a happy chance, Elizabeth - just as I was about to return to the boat.
