Vincas Kudirka

A memorial to Vincas Kudirka (1856-1899), on Gediminas Avenue in Vilnius (the main street in the 'New Town') - a physician and poet who wrote the words and the music for what become the Lithuanian National Anthem, in 1918. He was a leadin intellectual in the battle for independence from the Russian Empire.  The statue was erected in 2009 as part of the celebrations of the 1,000th anniversary of the first recorded mention of Lithuania.

I am enjoying my introduction to Lithuania, Tom.
Tom Wilson: Glad to know that, Ray + having been part of the USSR for about 50 years, it's certainly interesting
I'm sure he'd be quite proud of this memorial, Tom.
Tom Wilson: Being independent again only since 91, they are fiercely proud of their history.

Interesting to learn of other nations histories and greatnesses Tom. This statue has a fine style to it as I presume the doctor had.
Tom Wilson: Middle class and well-to-do, I imagine.

A fine memorial. It is good to know these countries are independent
Tom Wilson: It is indeed, Bill - the sad thing is that their politicians are as stupid as ours!

In cases like this, I can't help but wonder what he would have said of the USSR, had he lived so long.
Tom Wilson: I guess he'd have been fighting against them, too!
A very well designed memorial.
Tom Wilson: Yes, indeed, Brian.
