Vilnius- Stebuklas Selfie

The Stebuklas (magic) Stone in front of the Cathedral in Vilnius marks the starting point of the "Baltic Way" (or the Baltic Chain) - a peaceful demonstration for freedom on 23 August, 1989, involving approximately two million people holding hands in an unbroken chain from Vilnius in Lithuania, through Riga in Latvia to Tallinn in Estonia - a distance of 675.5 kms or almost 420 miles.  Read all about it in Wikipedia and, with pictures, here

Les selfies sont à  la mode.
Tom Wilson: That's true, Martine!

Cripes, Tom...that must be a candidate for inclusion in the Guiness Book of Records!
Tom Wilson: I think they would have needed inspectors on the spot - but, for all I know, they may have had! It must have taken some organizing!
A good spot for a selfie...
Tom Wilson: Perhaps the lady was in the Chain when young?
Not usually crazy about selfies - but this is quite cute!
Tom Wilson: Never bother with them myself, but I can see that this lady might have been recording some of her own history.
I haven't been to Vilnius in Lithuania, Tom, but I have been to Tallinn in Estonia. I would have loved to hold hands with someone for that unbroken chain. WOW.
Tom Wilson: I have friends in Lithuania who did participate - I'm sure they'll remember it for the rest of their lives.

Fascinating stuff. I remember all those incredible number of people holding hands but until this moment I hadn't appreciated the distance involved
Tom Wilson: It's quite a stretch!

I hadn't heard of the Baltic Way before, Tom, and will Google it with interest
Tom Wilson: It was an incredible event and, for the time, quite revolutionary I imagine.

Crikey Tom, I had forgotten that event, thanks for the reminder.
Tom Wilson: I don't think those who participated will ever forget it, Chad.

What a wonderful demontration in the Baltic countries. It is my wish to visit those countries one day - thank your this reminder!
Tom Wilson: I think you'd find a lot to interest you in all three places, Philine - I find them quite fascinating as places in which the human spirit survived domination by the Bear.
I don't remember this at all. Mind you the BBC probably ignored it
Tom Wilson: I don't recall it being on the news, either, Bill.
Like Bill I don't recall this event, under the circumstances at the time I suspect they would have been quite brave to do this.
Tom Wilson: I imagine so, Brian - although by this time the regime was beginning to crumble and I suspect that local security forces were looking the other way smile

I just made the comment to Brian's posting that the selfies thing seems to be a female thing, to a very high percentage. Here, the boy is left out ...
Tom Wilson: He'll probably be in the next shot smile
I would do that for peace.
Tom Wilson: Perhaps we should try to circle the globe!
