Welbeck Groom

Detail from a painting in the Harley Gallery at Welbeck Abbey. The painting, by an unknown artist is described as: Horse and groom in front of Welbeck Abbey, about 1630. Whoever the painter was, he could certainly capture character!

Yes...very good...although the painter seems to have left out the horse! smile
Tom Wilson: Nope - as you are well aware smile the painter got them in and I left them out smile
Yes - the character certainly shows!
Tom Wilson: An excellent bit of work, I thought.

A very agreeable and probably true to life portrait this is Tom
Tom Wilson: A face that a painter would absolutely have to get right .

The original Hipster eh Tom.
Tom Wilson: Could be - on the other hand he could have been a highly conforming country servant smile

Immortalised and a tribute to him that you have shown the detail of his face only
Tom Wilson: He certainly popped out of the canvas, Lisl.
Looks like a serious toper
Tom Wilson: He probably took a flagon or so, now and again, Bill.
It is an excellent work and well preserved.
Tom Wilson: A fine portrait, I thought. Of course, the main subject was the horse smile
Welbeck is on our list of local places we still have to visit.
Tom Wilson: The Abbey itself is not open to visitors, Brian - but the gallery is free to visit and it is part of a complex with an excellent farm shop and a very large garden cum gift shop. Well worth a visit and certainly not too far for you. The restaurant in the garden centre is also pretty reasonable, and nearby there's a good pub for food: https://www.elmtreeelmton.co.uk/
the artist surely captured all of the character in this mans face Tom... good find....petersmile
Tom Wilson: Whoever he was, he had a gift for portraiture, that's for sure, Peter.
