photoblog image Ivy, Duchess of Portland

Ivy, Duchess of Portland

Another picture from the Harley Gallery at Welbeck.  This was a wedding gift from the artist Philip de László, to the sitter in 1915.

The accompanying note says: "De László first met the 6th Duke in 1912 and became a close family friend. He painted over 30 portraits of the Portland family and attended Ivy's wedding at Welbeck's private chapel in 1915".

De László was a very popular "society" painter with an international reputation - born in Hnngary, be became a British citizen on his marriage to Lucy Guiness (yes, of that stout family) in 1914.  According to Wikipedia his oevre runs to 4000 items including drawings, but an article in the Guardian lifts that to 5,000

This is a wonderfully glittering image of this really beautiful lady! I don't know if Ivy would be a nice name for a woman today.
Tom Wilson: Oh, Ivy is a very 19th century name.
I am familiar with this type of painter and they still exist.
Tom Wilson: Oh yes, there’s always a demand from those with the money smile
