Palace entrance

Entrance to the newly built replica of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, in Vilnius.  All that was left of the original was the cellars, so a lot of imagination has gone into the reconstruction!

I like the spots of color...
Tom Wilson: Yes, rather nice walkway.
I don't know if it looks like the original... but it's great!
Tom Wilson: It's pretty well impossible to know, Elizabeth - all that was left were the basements, no floor plans, only engravings of the external appearance and some interior drawings - it's largely a work of imagination smile
Reconstructions always amaze me, Tom!
Tom Wilson: This one cost millions and was highly controversial.

With care to detail, too - what an intriguing sundial
Tom Wilson: A close up of the sundial tomorrow.

It looks good and I hope they put it to good use. Rebuilding must have cost a mint.
Tom Wilson: Good to see you back, Louis - hope all went well! Yes - millions of euros.

Well they've had a good go at putting it all back together Tom. Blown up in WW2?
Tom Wilson: No - long before, Chris - burned down following the Muscovite invasion in 1660.

A fine building Tom and I do like the pathway.
Tom Wilson: Highly controversial - a personal project of the mayor of Vilnius who was accused of spending millions on a vanity project when real historical buildings need major renovation work.
It looks authentic....I think grin
Tom Wilson: No one really knows, Bill - it's a pastiche - the building is modern construction using materials unknown at the time of the original and filled with stuff bought from all over Europe with no local connection at all.

Very amusing, Tom.
Tom Wilson: It is a rather comic attempt to restore former glory!
It is certainly very impressive, the paving is terrific.
Tom Wilson: Certainly nice paving smile
Another with shiny outdoor tiles. I never see shiny tiles used outdoors.
Tom Wilson: Must be treacherous when there is ice!
belle entrée!! amitiés
Tom Wilson: Merci, Jean Pierre!
