Porto-Igreja da Misericordia

"The Misericórdia Church is an interesting Renaissance private church that began construction around 1550. The main chapel features a neoclassical altarpiece inspired by the Jeronimos Monastery altarpiece in Lisbon, but on a smaller scale. In 1740, when the church was threatening to collapse, Nicolau Nasoni was chosen to design a new façade. The work of this Italian architect is characterized by its elaborate ornamentation. Despite having Baroque elements, the interior of the church maintains the austerity of the mannerist style particularly in the triumphal arch and around the cornice." i can't imagine being in a building so ornate

those chandeliers alone are just breath taking

such a piece of history
Tom Wilson: Quite amazing - I've been in Porto many times, but hadn't been in this church previously.

What a pompous church! Ecclesia triumphans
Tom Wilson: Triumphant indeed, Philine - not exactly to the Protestant taste smile

This is so unlike anything we have in the UK, or so it seems from your picture Tom
Tom Wilson: I've never seen anything quite like it here, Chris.
You certainly get to go in some beautiful churches Tom.
Tom Wilson: They're always worth a peep, Brian smile
I would be rather hesitant to sit below one of those ornate chandeliers, Tom. Hope they are well anchored.
