Heraklion Museum - in the picture

Double-headed axes were found all over Knossos - some huge and ceremonial like this, some small and ceremonial, some actual tools.  They obviously had some symbolic significance.  We were told that the "labyrinth" of Knossos - in which the minotaur was supposedly imprisoned - was, in fact the place where the axes were stored, as the Greek word for the object is "labrys", and there was no maze nor bull :-)  However, scholarship casts doubt on this proposition, since the word is originally Lydian (an extinct language from what is now eastern Turkey) and there is no evidence of its use in the Aegean.

I can’t help reflecting on the positions of the three people in this photograph Tom.
Tom Wilson: Yes, one does wonder about the story smile
I prefer the minotaur version.
Tom Wilson: Well, no trace of a labyrinth has ever been found in Knossos smile
INtimidating and well composed.
