Taken earlier this month - I had seen several pairs of these butterlies apparently engaged in aerial battles.  This one seems rather the worse for wear!

I have noticed that Speckled Woods are quite aggressive, but I imagine a bird has had a go at this one

Not in the best of trim is it, but what lovely patterning it has.
Tom Wilson: Yes, they are pretty little butterflies - I think they often go unnoticed.
It must be difficult to fly in this condition.
Tom Wilson: You'd think so, wouldn't you - but it seemed to manage ok.
