Haarlem-statue

Haarlem was under seige by Spanish troops from December 11, 1572 to 12 July, 1573.  This statue celebrates Wigbolt Ripperda (with the pike), who was military commander of the defense of the town; and Kenau Simonsdochter Hasselaar, leader of the regiment of women.

A wonderful statue and tribute. Both look fierce, as you might expect..

A slight difference of opinion...easy to fix...
Tom Wilson: You mean between the two of them? It does look a bit like a lovers' quarrel!
Yours and Alan's photos are next to each other and could make a funny gif.
Tom Wilson: I'll take a look at Alan's!
Good to see the ladies given due crdiet as wel as the men.
Tom Wilson: Absolutely! I suspect that Holland was a more equal society than the UK at this time!
They certainly convey attitude Tom.
Tom Wilson: They do indeed!

What a wonderful name - "Wigbolt". Perhaps the Duchess of Sussex will name any son after him.
it's great that they have both been properly memorialized Tom....petersmile
