Leiden - cathedral

Unfortunately, on the day of my visit, the cathedral was being set up for some kind of corporate dinner - not something I ever expected to see in a church!

Anything for a buck these days Tom smile.
As long as it wasn't a Bucks Party or Hens night.....
Tom Wilson: I think it was some official city function, but I did find it rather odd!

Well...this is interesting, Tom.
Tom Wilson: I've never seen anything of the kind anywhere!

nowadays people are likely to do anything in a house of worship

so ornate
Tom Wilson: The chandeliers are certainly something, but otherwise the cathedral is Protestant simplicity - I was in Krakow recently and the cathedral their is so ornate it is difficult to see the walls!
That does seem unusual...
None the less - it's a beautiful interior!
Tom Wilson: Yes, it's a very fine building.

How very strange indeed. I doubt somehow if this would happen in the UK..
Tom Wilson: I can't imagine it.

I must say, that is strange Tom. Normally in church the most you get is a small wafer of bread and a sip of wine.
Tom Wilson: Never sampled it smile Your repetitions must have been the result on clicking on a sticky Submit button smile
OMG, Tom. Inside the cathedral! That would be a first for me as well!
Tom Wilson: I did find it surprising!
Strange indeed Tom...
Tom Wilson: Very!
All sorts of things take place in churches and cathedrals these days, but a corporate dinner is a new one on me also.
Tom Wilson: I think it might have been some civic event.
Lovely looking but crowded.
Tom Wilson: They obviously expected a crowd!

Many church buildings in Dutchland are sold to become shopping arcades or museums. The Domkirche in Berlin also has a section they hire out for functions - but not under the pulpit smile I can imagine a function with that organ being played for background music.

Theologically speaking, a church building is just a building, while the actual church is the gathering of the congregants. But I can also think that one doesn't want to have a mess made of your gathering space. Come to think of it - all food will have to be prepared elsewhere, with a huge holding and serving capacity somewhere out of the main space.
Tom Wilson: Yes, lots of churches have been repurposed here, too.

That is incongruous, Tom
They must generate sizeable revenue from these events, Tom. This one looks to be quite elaborate.
