photoblog image A visit to Krakow - The Cloth Hall

A visit to Krakow - The Cloth Hall

The Cloth Hall sits in the middle of the main square of the old town of Krakow - it gets its name from originally being used for the trade in textiles, but now the booths inside are used in the tourist trade - amber and other jewellery, for example.  The Hall dates from the 15th century, when traders came from as far away as the middle east, but the present building dates from the restoration in the 19th century.

Taken on the Huawei P20 camera/phone.

A pause in the pics from Hollandshire - to be resumed at some future point.

I've been here Tom. I think this is the largest square in Europe..
Tom Wilson: I thought so, too, Chris, but it turns out that there are a number that are bigger - the biggest in Europe is Alexanderplatz in Berlin.
Astrid was in Krakow years ago (1987), Tom, but maybe we'll both have a chance to go together one year....
Tom Wilson: That was close to my first visit in 86 - a very tense time at the height of the Solidarnosc activities.

What a magnificent building dedicated to trade, Tom
Tom Wilson: It is indeed.
That is a beautiful building Tom
Tom Wilson: The whole square is very attractive.

Another huge building. I have recently been to Ypres, Belgium that also has an immense Cloth Hall.
Tom Wilson: Never been to Ypres - next visit perhaps - although my grandfather was there in 1914 smile

I love Kraków Tom, it is a most beautiful city and very clean. I loved this square.
Tom Wilson: Yes, it is a lovely square - too many tourists these days, however. It was much quieter when I last visited in 86 smile
What a grand building. They don't build factories like that anymore.
Tom Wilson: Indeed they don't!
A very fine looking building.
Tom Wilson: It is indeed, Brian.
A very impressive building Tom, whatever its use.
Tom Wilson: Yes, there's a branch of the National Museum on the upper storey.
