Krakow-Wieliczka salt mine - 5

The Spalone chamber (there are 3,000 chambers in the mine and more than 300 kilometres of galleries - the tourist tour of about 2 hours covers just 1% of the mine).  This is a carving representing the so-called "Penitents" who worked to burn off the methane gas that accumulated below the ceilings of the chambers, before a second shaft enabled proper ventilation of the mine.  It was a pretty dangerous job!

Cleaning out the spiders...
Tom Wilson: Something of the sort!
It's amazing piece of work, that's for sure!
Tom Wilson: It is indeed - in this chamber they put on a light show, ending with an explosion, to give some idea of the dangers!

OMG - imagine doing this for a living!
Tom Wilson: Not something I'd want to take on!
This would have been a great tour.
Tom Wilson: It was a really excellent tour - I'd recommend it to anyone.
