Baiona - the Parador

Inside the fortress is this parador (or state-run hotel).  I understand that an existing property, of some antiquity, was knocked down on the direct orders of Franco, and this parador was commissioned.  It is a VERY comfortable place to stay - but better to eat in the town.

Actually this is a pleasing piece of architecture Tom. The perculiar but distinctive crenellations give it added interest
Tom Wilson: Yes, not bad at all, I think.
I was thinking it looked a bit modern before I read your text. I can imagine it fits in well with the surroundings.
Tom Wilson: It does - just a part of the older building was retained, apparently - I suspect it is the dining room.
I wasn't expecting this. I don't imagine many people argued with Franco
Tom Wilson: Well, at least not to his face smile

An interesting modern use of an old style.
Tom Wilson: I got the impression from an inscription on the front entrance that it had been the PhD design of an architect. But I might be wrong.
Would have preferred if they had used matching stone to build it with Tom.
Tom Wilson: Yes, it would have been quite striking!
good POV for the perspective of the building
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Chantal.
It's sort of old but modern as well if that doesn't sound silly.
Tom Wilson: I know exactly what you mean, Brian.
Franco has a lot to answer for it seem Tom - the replacement doesn't look too bad all considered!
Tom Wilson: No, I think the architect knew what he was doing here. The inside is rather complex, because there are different levels on the same floor!
hehehe..., how easy is to blame Franco, Tom! It'll be interesting to read the whole story..Most of the Paradors in Spain (old castles, monasteries, etc) were repaired by Fraga, Ministry of Franco, in the 1960's and there you have them...smile
Tom Wilson: Oh, I don't think he's to be blamed here Juan Carlos - it's a very impressive building and an excellent place to stay smile

It is, as Chris has already said , a design that works very well and suggests gentle comfort.
Tom Wilson: Indeed, Richard. I can attest to the comfort!
Quite a nice mixture of old and new styles Tom
Tom Wilson: From the town, the parador looks as though it fits in, Richard.

For some reason, Tom, the sky gets most of my attention...did Franco order it painted thus?
