There once was a time when every schoolchild knew about the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa Maria - the ships in Columbus's attempt to discover the East Indies by a Westerly route. I'm not sure what they know today. However, one of Baiona's claims to fame is that the news of the discovery of the Americas reached Spain when the Pinta arrived in the harbour of what was then little more than a fishing village, on the 1st March, 1493, captained by Martin Alonso Pinzon. As with the Niña, "Pinta" was a nickname and the real name of the caravel is unknown.
