photoblog image "La Pinta"

"La Pinta"

There once was a time when every schoolchild knew about the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa Maria - the ships in Columbus's attempt to discover the East Indies by a Westerly route.  I'm not sure what they know today.  However, one of Baiona's claims to fame is that the news of the discovery of the Americas reached Spain when the Pinta arrived in the harbour of what was then little more than a fishing village, on the 1st March, 1493, captained by Martin Alonso Pinzon. As with the Niña, "Pinta" was a nickname and the real name of the caravel is unknown.

She's been moored in this marina since 1493...that has to be some kind of record, Tom.

Your very impressive "frame" is soaking up most of my attention...
Tom Wilson: Not quite that long, Ray - see tomorrow for a fuller story smile
Given her history - this is really quite amazing! Lovely photo!
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Elizabeth - check out tomorrow for a fuller story.

La Pinta could be the location for Brits going on short trips to get blotto Tom.
Tom Wilson: Wrong pronunciation, Chad smile (As I suspect you know full well smile )
I read that 'Pinta' name was at first thought to be related with the Pinto family, theory disregarded then, and now it is belived that its name was really "the Pintá", meaning the painted one. I like the contrast with the other boats Tom.
Tom Wilson: Now that is interesting, Juan Carlos - Wikipedia needs updating smile
Now that's a surprise Tom supper capture.
Tom Wilson: Glad you like it, Peter.

she doesn't look in bad nick for her age
Tom Wilson: Not quite as old as she looks, Paul.
A story to take me back Tom, yes we all learned about these ships way back when we were young. I like your presentation, you really are getting the hang of possibilities in Elements.
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Brian - yes, I hadn't realised how easy drop shadows are in Elements until I read an article about it smile
Is this supposedly the real Pinta? I like the shot very much.
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Mary - nope - it's a replica - see tomorrow for more information.
summer feel
Tom Wilson: It certainly was, Chantal - the only place I've had summer this year smile
I did wonder yesterday if we might be in Columbus territory
Tom Wilson: Your instincts were right, Bill.
Fantastic in the middle of all these boats Tom! I really like the frame.
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Richard - very easy to do the frame with Elements.

Hheehe at Chad! I wouldn't fancy going beyond the harbour mouth in this. Yes. I remember the history lesson, too. I expect today's history lessons at school includes such things as "What year did the Spice Girls have their first no. 1?" or similar rubbish.
Tom Wilson: It is actually known to sail, Alan - it's quite seaworthy, although the accommodation is not quite up to modern standards smile
