Down in the hold, with models and replicas of various things the Pinta brought back from what we now call the West Indies, including a couple of native Americans, a cockatoo, maize and various seeds and plants.

Something unintentionally comical about this display, isn't there, Tom.
Tom Wilson: Pretty well inevitable in a "museum" display, Ray smile
Do you think they really took some Native Americans back with them?
Tom Wilson: Oh yes - that was the case with pretty well all of the early voyagers. I think, in this case, there were three, but one died en route. The crew also brought back syphilis, previously unknown in Europe - but that's another story smile

Blimey - just imagine what they must have thought when they emerged into the "civilised" world Tom!
Tom Wilson: They probably fitted in quite nicely, Chris - after all, it is probably due to them that some Europeans have their genes smile

Hope they had something more warmer when they landed Tom.
Tom Wilson: They'd certainly find Baiona a trifle cooller!
good portraying
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Chantal.

These natives must have been a tremendous draw, poor things.
Tom Wilson: Well, I guess they fitted in, ultimately, Chad, since their genes are present in the European population. Although, recently, it is said that the Vikings brought native American women to Iceland a long time before Columbus. Apparently, Columbus brought back six native Americans in total.
It all looks very educational Tom.
Tom Wilson: It was, Brian - the kind of thing that would bring history teaching to life.

I believe one of my ancestors from Suffolk brought back a native woman from Greenland, where I understand he had a whaling station. I have a photo of my great-great-grandmother, and she has Inuit looks. I ought to get a DNA test.
Tom Wilson: And now we learn that the first humans in N. America were probably from Europe smile
I have no idea where my ancestors came from.....which is probably just as well.

Interesting stuff Tom, none of which I knew before
Tom Wilson: Last one tomorrow, Bill - then we can relax a little from the didactic mode smile
I hope they landed in Summer in Europe Tom! Fine educational image.
Tom Wilson: They landed on 1st March 1493, Richard - what Spring was like in Northwestern Spain on that day, I have no idea but let's hope the contrast was not too severe! Historically, it's been about 10C on that day smile

Hahah to your reply to Elizabeth! So did the Native Americans become slaves? I hope that had some decent heading on board the ship smile
Tom Wilson: I suspect that they became court pets - amusement for the nobles, but living quite well and, as I said to Chad, adding to the European gene pool smile
