photoblog image Beningbrough Hall - Captain James Cook

Beningbrough Hall - Captain James Cook

A portrait bust of the explorer - perhaps a little flattering?  By Lucien Le Vieux, Cook died in 1779 and this dates from 1790, so who knows how accurate a portrait it is?  There seems to be very little available on the sculptor, even searching French sites.

The video is a follow-up to yesterday: this is Mariza, the nearest equivalent today to Amalia, singing a song made famous by Amalia, Barco Negro - the black ship.  As you will discover - the Portuguese audience knows the words to all these fado songs.

Generous Bust!

Great Voice!
Tom Wilson: She has a wonderful voice - much more from her on Youtube
Yes- flattering...!

I really enjoyed this video. I love all the drumming... and she has just an amazing voice... not an easy song to sing!
Tom Wilson: It's no wonder she is the number 1 fadista - she has a really astonishing range - much more from her on Youtube.
makes me wonder also. There's no way I'd pick this as Captain Cook smile
Tom Wilson: Makes one wonder what he used as a model - other than imagination!
Joli buste, ce capitaine était un bel homme.
Tom Wilson: Certainement, mais il n'est pas Cook!

He looks like a Roman Caesar.
Tom Wilson: That could have been the model I guess!
I think Captain Cook has been turned into a Roman
Tom Wilson: You and Chad both smile
I had curly hair like that when I was a youngster smile
Tom Wilson: Ah! Times, past, Brian, times past ;-)
