Siena - before the Palio - On his way to war.

One of the participants in the show before the palio horse race in Siena, on his way through the streets, where it is the modern tourists who look out of place :-)  Number one of a series recording events before the actual race: for some reason there were all kinds of problems that delayed the start, which took place in the dark!  Too dark for photography in fact - horses dashing past at speed in the dark are not a good subject!

the man behind him is looking at you very curiously
Tom Wilson: Probably a criminal wondering if I'm an undercover cop smile
How funny! I love how they imprint the ab muscles and belly button into the armor!
Tom Wilson: Got to have a good fit smile
He looks the part Tom, good catch.
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Frank.

Waving that pointy object about looks like it might be fun, Tom.
Tom Wilson: I'm sure you would engage wholeheartedly, Ray smile

Well he definitely looks as if he's the genuine article Tom
Tom Wilson: He does indeed!
like many I heard about the palio and saw on television during reports the retransmission of this "race"
But I don't understand why you say it took place in the dark (which is very dangerous for horses galloping on a surface which is already not very safe for them)
Tom Wilson: It's not very safe even when run in broad daylight! Horses have died and jockeys have been badly injured. It wasn't totally dark, but after sunset, and, of course the race is run in the central square which is surrounded by buildings, blocking out light - so it was dim, rather than totally black smile This was a scanned print from film days.

The Palio can get very nasty, the rivalry between the contradas is immense.
Tom Wilson: Oh, it certainly is!
He looked to be taking it very seriously.
Tom Wilson: The locals take it very seriously indeed, Brian - each horse represents one of the districts of the city, each district has its own flag, etc., etc.
