photoblog image St Mary's, Beverley

St Mary's, Beverley

Detail from one of the Pugin-designed stained glass windows.  I like this one because Mary looks like a real person, rather than some idealisation.

And there is a resemblance between mother and child...
Tom Wilson: There is indeed.
i like the realism. plenty of ornamental details too
Tom Wilson: A masterwork smile
i was going to mention the resemblance between mother and child Tom... but Larry beat me to it...
it is a magnificent work of art... and you framed it very well....petersmile
Tom Wilson: Spotted by several, Peter.
It is really beautiful, Tom!
Tom Wilson: It is isn't it.

I agree, she really does, Tom
Tom Wilson: Very unusual, I think. Most representations seem to portray a rather girlish figure - this looks like a mature woman.

No doubt back in Victorian days this was a real life model Tom
Tom Wilson: Must have been, Chris - I wonder who it was?
I agree, Tom, and her son bears a a good resemblance. smile (I've just seen that I'm not the only one who's noticed!)
Tom Wilson: It seems to be common response, Ginnie - so it must be so! smile
Usually the Virgin is looking at Jesus, but on this occasion looking beyond, as he is. Also no sad expression.
Tom Wilson: Refreshingly different.
that is some art work
Tom Wilson: It is indeed!
his one features a fair amount of yellow.
Tom Wilson: It does indeed - supposed to be gold, I suppose.

Great picture, considering there is backlight that might have blown detail.
Tom Wilson: The Fuji is pretty good at avoiding that with backlighting, but, like others, has problems with reflected light.

Beautiful rich blues/yellows. Touching!
Tom Wilson: Superb, isn't it?
I agree with your thoughts on this one Tom, a very good window isn't it.

Mary looks a bit blokeish, Tom...now, wouldn't that be something!
Tom Wilson: Don't see many blokes like that in Sheffield, Ray - but, it could certainly lead to a reinterpretation of scripture!
I don't imagine there were many blonde women in the middle east in biblical times
Tom Wilson: Yes - a little unlikely - artistic licence I guess!
Lovely window... I agree, they look more real here than some.
