New Orleans - 1970 - Tomb

The New Orleans Lafayette Cemetary consists entirely of mausolea because the water level prevents the digging of graves. Although this is not a very good image and the slide was badly degraded I thought that the fact that it was for a fire brigade was interesting.  The tomb dates from 1852 and was part of the social benefits provided for the fire-fighters.  You can read more about the Cemetary here and about the tomb, here.

Interesting that they cannot have a proper graveyard, Tom
Tom Wilson: As the NO floods a few years ago suggests, the city is pretty low in the water smile

Fascinating and historical stuff Tom
Tom Wilson: There's a lot of that about in NO, Chris smile
I had never considered the problem of burials in an area with a high water table Tom.
Tom Wilson: I guess that if they tried to dig graves they'd have six feet of water!
a big tomb for an important person I guess
Tom Wilson: For the firemen, Chantal - any who died, not for just one person.
It shows the high regard the fire fighters were given with this impressive tomb Tom
Tom Wilson: It does indeed, Janet!
a peep into history...
Tom Wilson: Just that, Larry!
