Not many of my attempts at bird photography have survived on the slides from 1970/71 - this is one of the few. It's a Stellar's Jay, whose distribution is in the western states of the USA.  This was taken at the oldest winery in the USA, the Buena Vista Winery, Sonoma, California, established in 1857 by the Hungarian Agoston Haraszthy.  There's an interesting article on the vineyard in Wikipedia.

I'm so envious... I have yet to get a good photo of a Stellar's Jay - and they live right in my neighborhood. Ours tend to be shy and stay silhouetted for me...
Tom Wilson: I had one or two that were originally a bit better, but the colours had gone. I guess the birds were regulaer scavengers at this place - food was sold at the winery for eting at these tables and the jays must have become accustomed to humna company smile
I love that hair!!
Tom Wilson: Quite outstanding, isn't it? smile
Looks a handsome bird Tom
Tom Wilson: It is, Bill - a very handsome fellow

Absolutely charming: thank you Tom
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Chris.
A handsome bird wearing a beautiful dress Tom!
Tom Wilson: Lots of them around the winery - obviously a place for food!

Looks like it might be an attractive, bird, Tom.
Tom Wilson: It is, Ray - it's the equivalent of the Eastern States' Blue Jay.
Lovely looking bird Tom
Tom Wilson: Lovely plumage - and it ain't dead smile
They are in western Canada as well. I have shots here about a year ago after my trip to Seattle.
Tom Wilson: Yes, I've seen them around Vancouver.
