photoblog image Igreja De Nossa Senora de Pilar, Ouro Preto

Igreja De Nossa Senora de Pilar, Ouro Preto

Brazil, 1979.  One of the problems with Agfachrome (or perhaps it was called Agfacolour) is that, with time, most of the the colours turn red. This was so bad in this slide that conversion to mono (in this case sepia) was the only option.  The church was completed in 1731, replacing an earlier building, c.1700, made of wood and mud. A guide to Ouro Preto notes: "It is considered the pinnacle of baroque opulence and dramatic quality. Its austere façade is a sharp contrast to the lavish interior, decorated with 434 kg (956 lb) of gold and 400 kg (880 lb) of silver". Strange how the road goes right up to the Church door, Tom
Tom Wilson: The cars do rather detract from the image, don't they?
