A parasite of some sort Tom, judging from the bark of the tree this might be terminal..
Tom Wilson: I'll take your word for it, Chris - although the tree has already been terminated - it was felled a couple of years ago, this is the remaining stump smile
I am sure the experts will put their minds to this one Tom. Perhaps they have and found it harmless.

I have many examples of this fungus. It grows on stumps and dead wood.
Tom Wilson: Yes - I found this on a stump: I've found other pictures of it online but no name! It seems to be one of a category of fungus that breaks down stumps and rotten wood.
