photoblog image Rio Cathedral

Rio Cathedral

More correctly known as the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Sebastian.  The architect was Edgar Fonseca, who is said to have based his design on that of the Mayan pyramids.  According to Wikipedia:

"The New Cathedral, as it is sometimes called, is located in the center of the city. Conical in form and with a 96 metres (315 ft) internal diameter — 106 metres of external diameter — and an overall height of 75 metres (246 ft). Inside, the area measures 8,000 square meters and sufficient 5,000 seats; (it has a standing-room capacity of 20,000 people)."

The original Agfacolour slide was badly degraded and almost entirely purple in colour.

We can feel the Mayan inspiration here Tom!
Tom Wilson: Yes, it is pretty obvious, isn't it?

Blimey what a sight, not my idea of how a cathedral should look really Tom but it would be interesting to visit certainly
Tom Wilson: An amazing building - unfortunately, I didn't get to see inside.
It certainly doesn't look like a church
Tom Wilson: Certainly not a Norman construction, Bill smile
It must be huge to hold that many people.
Tom Wilson: Enormous!
I wsnt here a year ago Tom. It is amazing inside and the openings all over make it naturally air conditioned.
Tom Wilson: I've only seen pictures of the inside - didn't have the opportunity on my visit. Which is probably just as well, since my interior shots of churches were pretty awful!
Most unusual shape isn't it.
Tom Wilson: Not like any European cathedral I've ever seen, Brian!
