Krakow-Wawel cathedral

"The Royal Archcathedral Basilica of Saints Stanislaus and Wenceslaus also known as the Wawel Cathedral. More than 900 years old, it is the Polish national sanctuary and traditionally has served as coronation site of the Polish monarchs as well as the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of KrakówKarol Wojtyla, who in 1978 became Pope John Paul II, the day after his ordination to the priesthood, offered his first Mass as a priest in the Crypt of the Cathedral on 2 November 1946, and was ordained Kraków's auxiliary bishop in the Cathedral on 28 September 1958.

The current, Gothic cathedral, is the third edifice on this site: the first was constructed and destroyed in the 11th century; the second one, constructed in the 12th century, was destroyed by a fire in 1305. The construction of the current one began in the 14th century on the orders of bishop Nanker." (Wikipedia)

There are so many pieces to this Cathedral... Makes it quite interesting.

Excellent stuff, Tom.
Tom Wilson: Thanks, Ray.
You would not think it was one building Tom.
Tom Wilson: It is a bit of a mystery.
On dirait qu'il y a plusieurs styles.
Tom Wilson: C'est certainement varié.

A very big building Tom, and packed when we were there, as you might expect it to be
Tom Wilson: Lots of tourists.

Excellent with all the styles in the picture. Quite a history you have provided. All the popes that were chosen during my lifetime, always seem to include a Polish candidate. But memory could be full of holes as well smile
Tom Wilson: But only one made it to the chair smile

I do like the mixture of styles and think they compliment each other well.
Tom Wilson: It's a very interesting mixture.
A building of great significance in Polish history then
Tom Wilson: It is indeed, Bill.
Another fine looking building, you get to visit some lovely places on your travels Tom.
Tom Wilson: Got to make the best of it, Brian - don't know how many more I'll have!

I was in there in 1987, my mother-in-law sang in the Handel-choir and they had an exchange here in Poland. I was lucky to be with her and just walk around. Wonderful point of view.
Tom Wilson: A wonderful opportunity for you, Astrid!
What a history!
Tom Wilson: Quite!
