It's really beautiful!
Tom Wilson: He was certainly a fine calligrapher.

Clearly a different form of musical notation to ours Tom..
Tom Wilson: Yes - this is the Byzantine notation - https://www.stanthonysmonastery.org/music/NotationB.htm

How painstaking is that - it is delightful to the eye
Tom Wilson: Beautiful work.
The part that surprises me most, Tom is that this is a MUSICAL manuscript.
Tom Wilson: Yes, this is Byzantine notation - https://www.stanthonysmonastery.org/music/NotationB.htm - very different from the Western.
I don't suppose he imagined his work would still be admired today
Tom Wilson: Given the care he took, I think he may have hoped that it would last smile

One line big squiggles and one line small squiggles. The small squiggles is Greek, so the big squiggles must be musical notes/instructions. Never seen this type of notation before.
Tom Wilson: That's right, Louis - it is the Byzantine notation - https://www.stanthonysmonastery.org/music/NotationB.htm

This is really beautiful and I am always fascinated by "calligraphy" knowing the hours and hours of penmanship there goes into manuscripts as these.
Now I wonder how they can "translate" this into music. It looks so different from the Western musical notation (5 horizontal lines)
Tom Wilson: Yes, the Byzantine notation is very different - https://www.stanthonysmonastery.org/music/NotationB.htm
Sing it to us please.
Tom Wilson: I'd be happy to, if I could read the notation! https://www.stanthonysmonastery.org/music/NotationB.htm
I've never even, in a documentary, seen musical notation like this. It is magnificent handiwork regardless of what it sounds like.
Tom Wilson: Curious, isn't it? I too have never heard it mentioned on TV - https://www.stanthonysmonastery.org/music/NotationB.htm
I recognise the name, I thought it was one of his...smile Isn't it fine, a work of art Tom.
Tom Wilson: It is indeed, Frank.

beautiful work but I don't understand the music bit
Tom Wilson: Me neither, Paul - it's the Byzantine notation - https://www.stanthonysmonastery.org/music/NotationB.htm
