Univ-Firth Court

A contrast with yesterday's image - this is the oldest building in the University and named for Mark Firth, steelmaker, and proponent of the idea that Sheffield should have a university. He opened Firth College in 1879, which became part of the University.

This is a fine legacy for Mr Firth, who has made his mark in Sheffield permanently
Tom Wilson: He certainly did - died rather young, unfortunately, his great-grandson is a sculptor, one of whose works is in this building. We have a remote connection in that we live in the house he bought for his widowed mother and maiden sister smile
A very fine building.
Tom Wilson: Probably the only fine building in the university - the rest are a veritable mish-mash of styles!
