Sheffield Half Marathon 2019-4

The middle of the pack - these guys (and it is mainly guys) have probably trained seriously for the race and are regular joggers.  I ran a number of half-marathons years ago - with a personal best time of 1 hr. 43 mins in the Lincoln half-marathon, so I would probably have been among this lot, mind you - I was 53 at the time :-)

They all deserve credit Tom ( including yourself smile )
Tom Wilson: Indeed they do - it's no joke, putting in the time.
You'd have done better than I! I HATE to run! My father is a distance runner - and once analyzed my gait, told me I had a very pretty, efficient run... and that I should start training. He told me that he does all of his best thinking when he's running. I said "You know what I'm thinking about when I'm running, Dad? When I can STOP running!" smile But now get me on a bike or open up a dance floor... and my heart will be racing for hours!
Tom Wilson: Well, biking and dancing as well as walking (of which you seem to do your fair share) are all good alternatives smile

If people have made a lifetime habit of this sort of thing I expect they can continue to run seemingly for ever Tom
Tom Wilson: I saw an item recently, in the Guardian I think, which pointed out that runners in their 40s and 50s were posting better times than those in their 20s! When I was running, I'd be passing guys half my age, and be passed by others older than me!

So many people are out running these days Tom. I used to run for Frys’s chocolate factory cross country team in 1966. I used to train every evening by going for a run around Victoria Park in Bath. People would stare at me because people did not do that sort of thing. Today there seem to be polar opposites in society, those who keep fit and care about their diet and health, and then the other sort.
Tom Wilson: Now cross country is really hard! I ran one 10K in one of Sheffield's parks, and it was a killer!
My oldest son runs and enjoys it very much.
Tom Wilson: It's a great way to keep down stress and keep fit at the same time!
These things go on and on don't they. the route of the Lougborough Half Marathon comes right past our house by which time the runners are well spread out, it is hopeless trying to get out in the car without the help of the marshalls directing where the runners go.
Tom Wilson: With 6,034 in this event, it took some time! The relevant roads were closed from 8.30 to 13.30

It's an impressive achievement. My elder daughter is running in her third marathon at the end of next month.
Tom Wilson: That's really impressive - I never ran a full marathon, but I didn't start until I was 48 smile
I am impressed by your prowess Tom. I would need 1 day and 43 minutes
Tom Wilson: Oh, I'm sure you could walk the course in under five hours, Bill smile
another good action shot of the half-marathon Tom.
....petersmile
Tom Wilson: Thanks Peter

I know from my own experience that many hours of training would have gone into this. I was at my peak at around 45 or so. Now I much prefer to cycle especially as even walking after around 5km or so is still very painful. No dount for the TV coverage fo the London Marathon on Sunday the commentators will be talking about the "fun runners".
