photoblog image St George and the dragon

St George and the dragon

A lovely bit of work from the Portland Collection at Welbeck Abbey - that gallery is closed at present and some objects were on display in the neighbouring Harley Gallery.  It is a racing trophy made by Robert Garrard of London - a firm famous for its silver trophies of this kind.

This is fabulous. For some reason I always look if I can find paintings of St. George and the dragon....I make place for this on in our living room...
Tom Wilson: Me too!
What a trophy!
Tom Wilson: I wonder if they still hand out things like this?

It’s a wonder Saint George can see with that head gear on.
Tom Wilson: You'd think it a bit limiting, wouldn't you?

An Ascot trophy of a year I can't read. The trophy seems to have a lot of detail in the sculpture.
Tom Wilson: I think it must have been 1838 - since the notice says it was made 1838-39. Yes, I've checked - in 1838 the Gold Cup race was won by Sir George Bentinck's "Grey Momus", ridden by William Day.
terrific piece, Tom. now that i think about it, riding that horse also seems to be a challenge!
Tom Wilson: It does indeed!
what a magnificent sculpture Tom... it's difficult to photograph through a glass enclosure and get such a good image....petersmile

This is a very dynamic looking sculpture - the horse is jumping over the dragon.
