Chester cathedral - memorial

An interesting memorial to Thomas Greene, a former Mayor of Chester, and his wives, Ellen Brascye and Dorothie Davenport. He died on the 9th June, 1602.  Curiously, their hands have been sawn off at some time in the past - you can see that they are clean cuts rather than having been hammered off.

These works look to me almost like children's dolls, Tom.
Tom Wilson: They do, don't they?

A deliberate and calculated act to cut off their hands. I cannot imagine why
Tom Wilson: Nor me - just an act of vandalism?
I've come across a lot of memorials like this in different places over the years.
Tom Wilson: There's a lot of it about, Brian smile
It becomes rather macabre due to the lack of hands I think Tom...
Tough times. Others of that period lost their heads.
