Snowdon Railway Trip - 1

I took the 9.00 a.m. first train up Snowdon (10% discount :-)  ).  Here are a couple of the steam engines getting up steam for the day's work.  There are both diesel and steam engines - mine was diesel.  This is first of a number!

I suppose the steamers also burn oil, Tom?

I like the tight turns in the rails.
Tom Wilson: Nope, they are coal-fired, Ray - you can see the coal on the right of the pic. This is a rack and pinion railway, designed in Switzerland and the only one of its kind in the UK, so it can take tight turns and, of course, steep gradients.

This might be the only rack railway we have in the UK. Reminds me of Switzerland..
Tom Wilson: Yes, indeed - designed in Switzerland.
A trip I would like to make Tom
Tom Wilson: As you'll see, Bill, I got a beautiful day for the trip and it is well worthwhile.
Terrific picture Tom, we haven't been on this, as yet, but I am looking forward to the rest of your pictures.
Tom Wilson: It's a great trip, Brian - you can get the cost down by ordering online, then you get a reduction for OAPs, and another for ordering off-peak, on the 9.00 am train. You can save about £7.00.

it seems like more of a museum than a working mine

love the image
Tom Wilson: Not a mine, Sherri, but the station for the Snowdon Mountain Railway smile
they are heating up their boilers Tom... i like all the curved rail switches... it must be interesting to watch them hook up the passenger cars to engines....petersmile
Tom Wilson: Actually, Peter, the carriages aren't coupled to the engine - on the way up the engine is simply pushing the carriage. Quite how they get the carriage to move away from the platform on the way down beats me, unless there is already a small incline. https://snowdonrailway.co.uk/abt-rack-railway-info/
