Verkiai-Church of Holy Cross ceiling

Since independence many churches in Lithuanian have been restored - and work is still going on in some of them. In communist times many were used as warehouses of one kind or another.

Magnifique plafond, j'aime ses couleurs.
Tom Wilson: Merci, Martine.

Great that they were not pulled down, Tom.
Tom Wilson: Yes, it's a curious thing - the Soviets seem to have respected cultural monuments, and there were some great achievements, now forgotten, like an outstanding education system, universal employment, salaries for "cultural workers" such as artists and writers, etc. etc. It wasn't all bad!
That is beautiful Tom.
Tom Wilson: A detail shot tomorrow smile

Similar to what happened in some places after the Dissolution of the Monasteries
Tom Wilson: A nice parallel, Lisl!

How delightful. I expect the whole country was dreary in communist times..
Tom Wilson: Dreary was the word I guess - I was in Moscow, Poland and Hungary in communist times and only Hungary was lively!
Communism was a bit of a disaster really.
Tom Wilson: But some great achievements - and full employment! Not something you get in capitalism smile It's the old story - ideals go out of the window when corruption accompanies power.

For a moment I thought I was seeing a Stanley Spencer mural.
Tom Wilson: I see that! smile
That ceiling is even more impressive than the ones I was showing from Tewkesbury Abbey last week.
Tom Wilson: Quite stunning, isn't it?
Remarkable decor
That fact is to be thanked for. This is so beautiful.
