photoblog image Maiolica dish

Maiolica dish

No puzzle here - it's a dish.  The accompanying card says: "This magnificent dish is one of the world's earliest and most remarkable maiolica dishes depicting a story. In the centre the hunter Actaeon is killed by his own hounds after being turned into a stag by the goddess Diana. Around the rim is the battle of the Lapiths and Centaurs."  Why Diana and her ladies appear to be in some kind of bath tub escapes me.  It dates from about 1495, probably from Siena.

Yesterday's image was of an ink-stand - quite where the ink went and how it opened is a bit of a mystery to me!

I like it very much, Tom.
Tom Wilson: One could tell stories about it for hours!
i like the excellent condition of the dish, Tom. and the myths provided a nice inspiration for these artworks.
Tom Wilson: Very fine condition, considering its age!

Looks like the potter was getting excited when he made this Tom..
Tom Wilson: He certainly had some fun!
It sure beats three men in a boat
Tom Wilson: Mmm "Four nudes in a bathtub" doesn' have quite the same ring to it smile
What a fine plate, seems like the artist had a thing about naked people.
Tom Wilson: Indeed!
it's a nice dish and i was surprised to find the naked ladies in the painting back made in 1495 Tom... thanks for the story that you provided about the maiolica dish....petersmile
