Florence, Hercules and Cacus

Hercules and Cacus is a white sculpture to the right of the entrance of the Palazzo Vecchio in the Piazza della Signoria, Florence, Italy.

This work by the Florentine artist Baccio Bandinelli (1488-1560) was commissioned as a pendant to Michelangelo's David, which had been commissioned by the republican council of Florence, under Piero Soderini (gonfaloniere for life), to commemorate the victory over the Medici. (Wikipedia)

Not quite sure what to make of this Tom...
Tom Wilson: You have to read the story, Frank smile
Quelle musculature !
Tom Wilson: Mais oui!
I remember seeing this - and thinking how remarkable it is that every muscle is depicted so perfectly - how do they do that? Your photo looks great in B&W!
Tom Wilson: Well it is believed that Michaelangelo was present at autopsies - perhaps even undertook them.

I fine work by such a young artist, Tom. smile
Tom Wilson: Weird, eh? That's what Wikipedia says, but I have now changed it to 1488-1560 smile

We saw this too, Tom and our guide explained that showing this kind of scenes show that they have power over others and that it all had to do with suppressing... I think it is fascinating to see how detailed these sculptures are.
Great in B&W.
Tom Wilson: They are certainly masterworks!
Strewth he was only 9 when he died!
Tom Wilson: Odd that, isn't it - I've changed it, but that's what Wikipedia had. I wondered if it was the time taken to make the statue, but nine years seems excessive!

The kneeling man has been dealt a few heavy blows. Dramatic art work and well pictured.
Tom Wilson: He was, supposedly a giant, but Hercules was obviously bigger!

All great dynasties fall.
Tom Wilson: You mean Boris mark 2 is unlikely? Hope your care homes are not suffering too badly in this crisis.
Impressive musculature, Tom smile

I have just refreshed my memory of the story. It's terrifying!
Tom Wilson: The Greeks knew how to tell a tale smile
The detail in this is amazing.
Tom Wilson: These sculptors knew their anatomy.
Two against one. David wins.
Tom Wilson: Inevitable smile
